MARRIAGE COUNSELING: Find the Best Marriage Therapist

Relationships are the cornerstone of life. And marriage, especially, can become the most meaningful foundation of our day-to-day routines and happiness. But marriages aren’t always easy, and the way we communicate can disrupt the strength of our relationships. Maybe we keep having the same arguments, leading to resentment. Or the intimacy fades, leaving the relationship feeling more like roommates than partners.

Whether you’re adjusting to a new marriage, rediscovering your relationship, or redefining the relationship, marriage counseling gives you and your partner the space to achieve your relationship goals.

At Insight Mental Health Group, our marriage therapists work with compassion, collaboration, and curiosity. Rather than deciding who is “right” or “wrong,” we help couples recognize the patterns keeping them stuck and find healthier ways to move forward together.

What Is Marriage Counseling?

Marriage counseling is a form of therapy that focuses on marriages and relationships. Also referred to as “marriage therapy” or “couples therapy,” marriage counseling gives couples a space to talk about how they feel and what they might like to improve. You and your partner work with a trained marriage therapist to explore concerns, improve communication, and better understand each other's emotional needs.

At Insight, our counseling for married couples addresses concerns ranging from communication and intimacy to infidelity, parenting, blended families, and decision or divorce therapy. But you don’t have to be in a crisis, on the verge of divorce, or struggling to start marriage therapy. You might just want to learn how to communicate better and strengthen the relationship.

Does Counseling for Married Couples Work?

Yes, marriage counseling does work for a lot of married couples. Some research shows that marital counseling can positively impact 70% of couples receiving treatment. Other research demonstrates that couples who receive relationship education also show significant improvements in their relationship skills, relationship quality, and family harmony over time.

This doesn’t mean that marital counseling will work for every marriage. But marriage therapy can help many couples create meaningful change, particularly when both partners are willing to participate honestly and look at the patterns developing between them.

It’s also important to understand what success means for each couple. For one couple, it might look like rebuilding trust and intimacy again. For another couple, it might mean choosing when separation might be the healthiest path forward.

The purpose of a marriage therapist isn’t to force you to stay together. They’re there to help you understand your relationship more clearly so you can make thoughtful choices about what comes next.

How Much Is Marriage Therapy?

The cost of marriage therapy depends on several factors, such as the therapist, session length, insurance coverage, and location. For example, a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) may cost more than an associate-level therapist but less than a psychologist. Or marriage counseling in Washington might cost more than in Arkansas but less than in California.

It’s best to inquire with the marriage counselor you’re interested in seeing, or contact your insurance provider, before starting marriage therapy.

At Insight Mental Health Group, our couples and family therapy sessions are typically 50–55 minutes, with a fee of $150 per session if paying out-of-pocket or using out-of-network benefits. Our initial intake is also 60 minutes and costs $200 out-of-pocket or with out-of-network benefits.

Is Marital Counseling Covered By Insurance?

Many insurance providers do cover marital counseling. But again, it’s helpful to confirm this before starting treatment. If you’re looking for marriage counseling that takes insurance, Insight Mental Health Group is currently in-network with several insurance plans, including:

  • Aetna

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (any plan)

  • Cigna

  • First Choice Health

  • HMA

  • Kaiser PPO (no HMO plans)

  • LifeWise

  • Premera

  • Regence

  • Regence Group Administrators

  • UMR

  • UnitedHealthcare

Insurance plans vary, so we recommend confirming your benefits and coverage before your first session. Insight Mental Health Group accepts insurance for marriage counseling because one partner receives a diagnosis as part of treatment. Your exact coverage and out-of-pocket costs will depend on your individual plan, so we recommend confirming your benefits before your first session.

If we’re out-of-network with your plan, we can provide an itemized statement, called a “superbill,” that you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.

FAQs About Marriage Therapy

Choosing marriage counseling can bring up plenty of questions, especially if you and your partner have never been to therapy together. Here are a few things that may help you know what to expect.

What is the success rate of marriage counseling?

Recent research suggests that couples receiving marriage counseling show improvement rates of 70%–80% in comparison to partners not receiving treatment. However, this isn’t to say that the same success rate applies to every couple or every form of marriage counseling.

Outcomes depend on so many factors, such as the concerns being addressed, the therapeutic approach, how consistently couples participate, and what each couple considers a successful outcome.

How does marital counseling work?

Marital counseling usually starts with the marriage counselor getting to know you, your partner, and the relationship. They’ll ask about your relationship history, current concerns, strengths, and goals.

From there, you and your marriage therapist will work together to understand what’s happening that’s causing the distress, conflict, or disconnection. Then, sessions may focus on improving communication, conflict resolution, trust, and intimacy, or reaching any goals that matter to your relationship.

What to expect from an LMFT?

An LMFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist. This is a mental health professional who is trained to understand concerns within the context of relationships and family systems. When working with an LMFT, you can expect your therapist to pay attention not only to each person's individual experience but also to the patterns developing between you.

Do you accept Medicaid (Apple Health) or Medicare?

No, we currently do not accept Medicaid or Medicare. We accept self-pay options alongside other insurance plans.
