INDIVIDUAL THERAPY:
Find the Best Fit for You
What if you didn’t have to feel stuck, anxious, overwhelmed, or low anymore? Perhaps life feels really difficult right now, whether it’s due to anxiety, your relationships, work, family, or just…everything at once. Or maybe you can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t quite “right.”
You don’t need to have it all figured out to start therapy. In fact, therapy might be the place where you can begin to understand what’s happening.
Individual therapy gives you a private space to talk through what you’re feeling with a trained professional. And if you’re thinking, But I don’t even know what I need help with, this is okay.
Through one-on-one counseling, you may find that you understand yourself better and can learn some practical coping tools along the way to help you face whatever life brings.
So, what exactly is individual therapy, and how can it help you?
What is Individual Therapy?
Individual psychotherapy, also known as “one-on-one therapy,” provides a private, safe, and confidential space to talk with a trained mental health professional.
There isn’t a “right” reason to start therapy. Some people begin counseling because anxiety is getting in the way of their daily routines. Others aren’t sure what’s wrong – they just know they don’t feel like themselves. Whatever you’re dealing with, know that you don’t have to face it alone.
Research shows that therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, could help you manage mental health challenges, like depression and anxiety. Maybe work stress is getting too much. Perhaps life has thrown you a curveball and left you wondering, What am I supposed to do now? Or maybe you’ve been helping others for so long that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to have someone there to support you. Regardless of your concerns, therapy can be adapted to your needs.
How Does Mental Health Counseling Work?
One-on-one counseling is a collaborative process where you and your therapist explore what’s happening in your life and what you’d like support with. This may include understanding your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and any recurring patterns.
Your first individual therapy session will usually involve an assessment, but this doesn’t mean you need to arrive with a perfectly formed explanation of why you’re there. Your therapist will ask about your background and what’s been difficult lately. This conversation can be used to start figuring out what you want from therapy.
Regular sessions may then take place weekly or every other week. But your counselor won’t tell you what to do. Instead, you’ll talk through what’s happening, look at what may be contributing to it, and consider different ways of responding. You might also try doing something different between sessions and come back to talk about how it went.
Over time, you may start to notice connections that weren’t obvious before. For instance, you could see how events from your past may be influencing your life today or understand that certain beliefs are affecting your outlook and actions.
Personal Therapy at Insight Mental Health Group
Insight Mental Health Group provides one-on-one individual therapy in Washington State at our offices in Bothell and Snoqualmie.
Individual therapy gives you space to explore what’s troubling you, whether this is related to your mental health, relationships, family, work, or living with a physical health condition.
Our therapists draw on a range of approaches depending on what you need. For instance, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you discover how your thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected, giving you the opportunity to make different choices in the future. In contrast, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy helps people process traumatic or distressing events from their past so that they experience fewer symptoms, such as flashbacks.
Our team also has different areas of focus, from neurodiversity and chronic illness to body image and mood disorders. You can browse our providers to find someone who feels like a good fit.
If you'd like to get a feel for whether a therapist may be a good fit, a free 15-minute consultation is available on request. Otherwise, you can book an intake session (assessment) to talk in more detail about what brings you to therapy. After this, regular 50-minute sessions can focus on whatever matters to you.
Here’s what you can expect from working with one of our therapists:
-
A treatment plan based on what you want to work on
-
A safe, private space where you can talk openly without being judged
-
Space and time to make sense of thoughts, feelings, relationships, or patterns
-
A therapist who listens to your perspective and involves you in decisions about your care
-
